I was dropped off at the rear of the mall. I had been working at my dad's store ever since school last Friday. This was one of the slowest stores here, being in a small mall. The season hasn't been to good either, the bus strike that started a few days ago combined with the snowstorm we have been having and this global recession. I walked to the door and opened it and turned on the lights. I opened all the breakers and made my way to the front. I placed my bag of items on the counter and turned on the computer. I waited for it to boot up and filled out the Cash sheet. December 23rd 2008. I began to count the cash. After five minutes of that I finished up and opened the front doors and was met with the sign EI Sports. I went back behind the desk and got ready for another long and boring day.
The first half went slowly but I kept myself entertained with some internet games. Then a package came in from RBK. I opened the box and found some jerseys inside. I pulled out the invoice and read it. 'Ottawa M, Ottawa XL, Toronto S, Montreal XL,' and hello, what's this? 'Ottawa DM, Ottawa DXL' I reached into the box and pulled out two irregular jerseys. They were irregular due to the fact it is slightly bigger for its size and has wing slots made into the back. I smiled to myself as it was finally the day were the Dragons have effected the economy in this way. It would make sense though, Jerseys were over one hundred dollars and cutting wing slots without ruining the fabric would be hard. I took the box back to the counter and began entering the items into the system. After I finished I got back onto the computer and began messing around again.
Someone came in and I looked up; it was my replacement, Mel. She was a blonde around twenty.
"Hi William, how things going?" she asked
"Slow, as usual." I responded, "I'll go get my lunch now." I walked out and went over to KFC and bought myself the usual, Chicken burger and fries. I sat down and ate it before walking back to the store. I saw my mother was already there waiting for me.
"Shall we go?" I asked her.
"One second while I get this box." she said as she went over and got one. I got my stuff and we began heading out to the parking lot. I looked up and saw a peculiar sight, a dragon flying overhead in a business suit. I smiled and continued walking to the car before getting in. My mother got in and we departed.
"So, what o you want for christmas?" she asked me as we pulled on the highway.
"Xbox live, Far Cry 2, Call of duty 5 and EB gift cards." I said
"EB gift cards will cover everything else."
"If that's what you want."
We got home and I went to my room and flipped on the computer, puttin in my disc of Star Wars Empire At War Forces Of Corruption and began to play that for hours. I was then called up at six o'clock to have supper, ate it and began playing my game again. I went to bed at three and slept until three PM the next day. I got up, had my brunch and began playing my game again until twelve, where I went to bed.
I got up late again the next day, even though it was Christmas, as I have to wait for my grandparents to come over. My grandparents on my mom's side was at my aunt's place and my grandparents on my dad's side were at my uncle's place. My mom's parents came first. They arrived about one o'clock and I was called up from my room.
"William! Nanny and Poppy are here!" I heard my mother call down. They come from Newfoundland so they have a different accent. I ran upstairs and greeted them.
"Aye, me boy, how'e doin'?" I heard my grandfather ask.
"Alright, yourself?" I asked back
"Fine." he responded as we exchanged a handshake.
"It's so good to see you again." I heard my grandmother say from behind him.
"You too." I responded as we hugged each other.
"All right let's go open some presents." my aunt suggested.
"Yes, let's" I responded. We spent an hour opening the presents. I got what I expected, Farcry 2, CoD 5, 13 month Xbox live and $70 in EB gift cards. My brothers got a few EB gift cards as well, I gave my grandfather a 'Listen In' and I can't recall the other items that I gave on Christmas. After the unwrapping, I quickly bolted down the stairs to the basement, where I started to play Farcry 2. I was called up around supper when my other grandparents, my aunt and my uncle came in.
"Eh, George, how's it been?" I heard 'Poppy' say.
"Not bad, yourself?" 'Grandpa' responded.
"Fine, fine." 'Poppy' replied as I made my way upstairs.
"Hey, Grandpa, how's everything in Winnipeg?" I asked as I came around the corner.
"Oh, it's gone from bad to worse there. If you thought crime was bad then, you haven't been there since those stones started showin' up. They might actually ban the dragons from city limits."
"That's awful, they can't just ban people cause some of them are crooks."
"They don't have much choice, it is out of control there as the dragons are becoming a threat to public safety. They already banned the stones from the city but they still seem to find their way to the homeless population." I was just stunned, I didn't see the flip side of these stones appearing.
"Can't the police force stop them?"
"They're tryin' but the dragons are banning together to form gangs. But let's not worry about that; It's Christmas. Let's go open some presents."
"Arn't you gonna' give your grandma a hug?" she asked.
"Of course." I said as I we hugged.
"Let's get this party started." I heard my uncle say as he entered the living room and placed the presents down. We started opening more gifts, I got another $80 dollars in EB cards and then we set the table for dinner and sat down.
"Anyway, that 'Radar Hula Hoops and Playful Pigs' an excellent book." I said, talking to my uncle.
"Well, he the author made a few more books like that." he explained.
"Really? Is there any chance I can borrow them?" I asked.
"Sure, next time you come over, I'll lend you one. I think the one you would prefer would be 'Brain Fuel.'"
"Sounds cool, I'm looking forward to a god read." Just then my mother, aunt and grandmothers cam out with the food items: Turkey, potatoes, turnip, sweet potatoes, salt meat and others. We sat down, ate and had some general discussion.
After we finished up, the adults stayed in the living room, while I went don to the basement and started to play Farcry 2 again. It was a few hours before I was called up and waved goodbye to everyone. Afterwards, I continued playing my game. I then went to bed around three.
I woke up at one o'clock the next day and had an excellent idea. I ran upstairs and called my friends.
"Hi William." the voice on the other side of the phone said.
"Hi Matthew, I was thinking and I came up with the idea of maybe we could go out wednesday and launch some rockets to celebrate."
"You mean new years?" he asked
"No, Easter. Of course new years!" I responded.
"Sounds great, let me check with my dad." he said as he put down the phone.I waited for a minute before he came back. "He said 'Sure and what time?'"
"Excellent, how about 11:30?"
"I'm guessing PM, let me check." I waited another minute. "He okayed it."
"Well, I'll call Paul, MCKG and Nathan, how about you get Gordon and MCKR? Then call back in twenty minutes."
"OK, sounds cool. I'll get right on it." We said goodbye and hung up. I then called my friends and found they were all available, and I waited for Matthew to call back. The phone then rang, I picked it up and aswered.
"Hi," Matthew responded, "Gordon said he can make it but MCKR is busy."
"OK, well, Nathan, MCKG and Paul can all make it."
"OK, so it will be the six of us?"
"Seems so, see you then." we said our goodbyes again and hung up. 'Well, there's at least there's one exciting thing coming up.' I thought silently to myself. I went back to my 360.
