My name is William S. I was a tall teenager about 6' 3'' I used to do all the normal teenager did: I played xbox, hung out with friends, did my homework. My friend Gordon is the one who changed all that. He used to be 5' 6'' and now is about two and a half meters or 8' 1''. Now I am dedicated to the pursuit of the Dagoe Genome project. My life has been a roller coaster ever since. This all happened last winter.
"Will this do?" asked my friend Gordon as he pulled another rock out of the snow.
"No that won't do." I replied as I search for more rocks in the snow. I was looking for the perfect rock to bring to science class for a geology project. Being me I like doing things over the top so that is why I am searching for the perfect rock and not settling with anything less. "Oh, shiny," I said as I lifted another rock out of the snow. "this one might be a keeper."
"You sure you want that rock? sure its sparkly and all..." Gordon asked as he pulls out a jagged one with small black stones in it, "How about this one?"
"That is concrete. You do have a point though this is too small." I replied. We were looking in the park along the Ottawa river near my house. It wasn't that far, only about a five minute walk but since there was around 30cm of snow it felt like twenty minutes.
We kept searching the park for another thirty minutes before we hit the jackpot. We were walking through about to give up when we saw a pile of rocks in what appeared to be a small trench.
"Gordon, Quickly!" I said as I spotted it, "Somebody was collecting a whole bunch of stones!" I never been so excited over rocks in my life. I turned around just in time to see Gordon dive into the pile frantically searching for the best stone. He tore that pile apart until he held up a grey-black stone in his glove.
"Dude! this thing is freaking epic! I shotty keeping it!" He exclaimed as he started waving it.
"English Please; shotty is not a word." I replied with a blank stare.
"I meant I found the perfect rock and I am using it." he taunted as he waved the stone in his hand.
"This is a paired project remember?" I said back with an 'are you stupid?' look. He then replied with the bird.
"Come on, put it in the bag and let's get back to my place." I told him as I tossed him the bag of rocks. With a mumble of irritation Gordon did as he was told and followed me back to my house.
We walked back to my house through the below freezing temperature. As we walked we stared joking about another one of our friends and then I told him he needs a new hockey team as I was in full Toronto maple leaves gear. He just gave me the finger again. Then we started talking about what was going on recently.
"Hey Gordon, did you hear that dragons were popping up around Ottawa lately?" I spoke up.
"Yeah, it's crazy. First I was like 'Holy crap dragons are real!!'; now I'm like 'Oh my God there are dragons in Ottawa!'" he replied.
"And to thin that this has all happened between summer and winter, One entirely new sentient species appears and then now they are all over. So much has happened." I said.
"I still think they should be let into the catholic school board." Gordon started again.
"And I told you that that will happen over time... Think of this as racism, OK? Racism did not just stop over night it took a LONG time for that to happen and there is still some remnants. Catholics think of them as demons so they need to be told they're not. Unfortunately a 2000 year old religion is pretty stubborn." I replied.
"Maybe they can get that guy, what's his name again? Nathan something?" Gordon suggested.
"Ethan Compas?" I corrected.
"Yeah him! He is probably the most famous dragon for being the first one. Maybe he can talk some sense into those people." Gordon replied.
"Well get out your checkbook, I heard he is a high roller now." I shot him down as we walked into the doorway of my house.
When we got home we then jumped on the couch and started playing my xbox 360. We played Halo 3 with some Call of Duty 4 and Farcry Instincts Predator. After That is when the work came in.
"OK, which one should we check first?" I asked him Gordon as I brought the bag of rocks over to my workbench. Luckily I still have my microscope from six years ago. We were supposed to describe the properties of the rock and one of those properties being crystal form so I decided I should use it. I put on rubber gloves because these rocks were on the ground and I don't know where they came from.
"How about the sparkly one?" he suggested.
"All right, we'll use that one first" I replied as I grabbed it and placed it on the microscope. We copied the crystal form, then measured it, weighed it and the tried to scratch it. After that we were on to the next one and continued this until we got to the dark grey one. This time I had a better look at it. It was Dark grey with black sections on it and what surprised me i how smooth it was. Most of the others either were rough or if they were smooth they had a crack or chip in it. It was intact. So I started my tests on it. It really didn't have any defined crystal form, it was 15 cm in diameter, It was 600g exact...
"That is strange it is exactly 15 cm and exactly 600g and perfectly smooth. It must be machine made. That means we are not allowed to use it." I told Gordon and then it looked like he was about to cry.
"Damn it we aren't allowed using the perfect stone?" he asked annoyed.
"Unfortunately not; but you can keep it if you want." I said as I tossed him the stone. It was like it was slow motion, as soon as he grabs it, it smashes into dust in his hand spreading it all over him.
"What the hell Will! You broke it!" He said, at least that is what I thought he said because I was staring at his hand was burning black.
"Gordon, Your hand..." I said monotone as I pointed at his hand.
"Holy F***!" He cursed.
